_The format debate matters less than the reading relationship — but format choices still have measurable effects._

Every Malaysian parent with a toddler has been in this moment: the child points at the phone and says _book_, and you wonder whether that counts.

It does count. But not always equally. And the difference is not about which format is morally superior — it is about how the formats interact with a toddler's specific developmental needs.

Here is what a recent review of the studies shows.

## [What the Research Finds](#what-the-research-finds)

A [2021 meta-analysis in Review of Educational Research](https://doi.org/10.3102/0034654321998074) pooled 39 studies of children's reading on paper versus screen. Most of the studies involved children aged about 4 to 6. On average, it found no clear difference in story comprehension. The details varied:

**Paper did better when:**

- The two versions were the same except for added voiceover or highlighted print

**Digital did better when:**

- Added features were tied to the story, such as prompts that build background knowledge, and an adult was involved in both formats
- The goal was learning new vocabulary

The same review found that a built-in dictionary did not help story comprehension and could distract from the story. A toddler who pauses to press a sound button may likewise miss the sentence that explains why a character is crying.

This does not mean digital reading is bad. It means interactivity needs to be designed carefully.

## [The Malaysian Context](#the-malaysian-context)

Malaysian households present a specific dynamic worth acknowledging. Many families:

- Have children navigating Bahasa Malaysia at home and English at school (or vice versa)
- Have grandparents who read in one language and parents who read in another
- Have limited physical space for large book collections
- Rely on smartphones as the primary household device

In this context, digital reading access often exceeds print access. A family with a smartphone and a subscription to a quality digital library has more reading material available than a family with three physical shelves.

The question is not whether to use digital formats — it is how to use them well.

## [A Framework for Ages 2–6](#a-framework-for-ages-26)

### [Ages 2–3: Strongly Favour Print](#ages-23-strongly-favour-print)

At this age, the physical experience of a book is part of the learning. Turning pages, holding the book, pointing at pictures — these tactile interactions are cognitively meaningful. Digital formats that mimic this (large-format tablets with simple swiping) can approximate it, but rarely match it.

**Recommendation:** Use digital formats as a supplement (travel, waiting, bedtime wind-down in low light), not as the primary reading experience.

### [Ages 3–5: Introduce Simple Digital With Guardrails](#ages-35-introduce-simple-digital-with-guardrails)

E-reader style apps with minimal animation are appropriate. Read-aloud apps that highlight text as it is read can support phonics development. Highly interactive "game-book" apps should be limited — they are more game than book at this age.

**What to look for in digital books for this age:**

- Text that highlights as it is read aloud (reinforces phonics)
- Minimal pop-up interactions (one or two per page maximum)
- A simple interface that does not compete with the story
- The ability to turn off narration so you can read together

### [Ages 5–6: Both Formats Work Well With Parent Involvement](#ages-56-both-formats-work-well-with-parent-involvement)

By this age, the format matters less than the adult involvement. A parent who reads a digital book actively, asks questions, and discusses the story is giving a child more than a print book read alone.

## [Building a Healthy Hybrid Habit](#building-a-healthy-hybrid-habit)

The families that do this best are not print-only or screen-only. They treat formats as tools with different strengths:

| Situation | Better Format | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Bedtime story | Print | Lower blue light, tactile ritual, easier to control pacing |
| Travel or waiting | Digital | Portable, accessible, distraction management |
| Learning a second language | Digital with narration | Audio reinforcement accelerates vocabulary acquisition |
| Rereading a favourite | Either | Familiarity makes the format less important |
| New vocabulary | Print | Joint attention without digital distractions |

## [The One Rule That Matters Most](#the-one-rule-that-matters-most)

Whatever format you use: **read together**.

The developmental benefits of reading come primarily from the conversation that happens around stories, not from exposure to text alone. A parent who reads with a child — pointing at pictures, asking what happens next, laughing at the same moment — is providing something no format can replicate.

Digital books that replace parent involvement are less valuable than digital books that extend it. The goal is not to optimise the format. The goal is to build the reading relationship.
