## Questions parents ask

<details>

<summary>What are STEM books?</summary>

</details>

<details>

As early as toddlerhood, with sturdy first books about animals and the body. The reading grows with the child, from one idea per page to first reference and experiment books by about seven.

</details>

<details>

<summary>What is the difference between STEM books and science books for kids?</summary>

Science books are one part of STEM, which also covers technology, engineering, and maths. For young children the line is soft: any book that feeds curiosity about how the world works belongs here.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Do I need to know science to read these with my child?</summary>

No. These books are written to be shared. Read together, ask questions alongside your child, and treat not knowing as part of the fun.

## [Feeding a child's curiosity](#feeding-a-childs-curiosity)

Some children ask a question and then ask three more. STEM books for kids meet that curiosity with real answers: how a seed becomes a tree, why the moon changes shape, what happens inside a machine. The best ones explain without talking down, and leave a child wanting to know the next thing. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, but on the page it simply means books that help a child understand the world.

## [What counts as a STEM book](#what-counts-as-a-stem-book)

A STEM book can be many things: a first science book about the body, a nature guide to the animals in the garden, a picture book about space, or a hands-on book of simple experiments. Dinosaur books belong here too, and for many children they are the doorway in: a child who memorises every dinosaur is doing real scientific thinking. A good science book for kids is still a good book, with a clear thread, a sense of wonder, and pictures that make an idea stick.

## [Choosing by age](#choosing-by-age)

For toddlers and threes, look for sturdy books with bold pictures and one idea per page. For four to six year olds, first science and nature books that answer what is this and how does it work are ideal. From about seven, a child can enjoy longer non-fiction, first reference books, and experiment books they can follow themselves. Match the book to the stage, and let your child's own questions choose the subject.

## [Learning that reads like a story](#learning-that-reads-like-a-story)

You do not need to be a science parent to share these books. Read together, follow the questions, and treat not knowing as part of the fun. When your child asks something you cannot answer, look it up together: that habit, finding an answer in a book, is worth as much as any single fact. Science books also build vocabulary quickly, because they name real things a child is genuinely interested in.

## [STEM books for Malaysian families](#stem-books-for-malaysian-families)

At Wau Books, our STEM and science books sit alongside titles that reflect Malaysian nature and life, from rainforest animals to the world outside the window. Where they exist, we include science books in Bahasa Malaysia so a child can learn in the language of home. Filter this collection by age or theme to find the right book for your young scientist.
