# Picture Books

Bold pictures, few words, and stories made for reading aloud together.

## Questions parents ask

<details>

<summary>What age are picture books for?</summary>

Most suit children from about two to six. Younger toddlers enjoy the pictures and sound of a board book; by five or six many children begin to read the words themselves. A good picture book, though, has no strict upper age.

</details>

<details>

<summary>What is the difference between a picture book and a story book?</summary>

In a picture book the art carries much of the story, so it works before a child can read. A story book leans more on the words. Many titles sit between the two, and both are excellent for reading aloud.

</details>

<details>

<summary>What makes a good picture book for toddlers?</summary>

Sturdy pages, bold pictures, and very few words. Toddlers follow rhythm and repetition, so a book that is a pleasure to say aloud will be asked for again and again.

</details>

<details>

<summary>What are good picture books about friendship and kindness?</summary>

Look for a simple, warm story where a character learns to share, include, or make up after a fall-out. Filter this collection by theme to see our current picks.

</details>

<details>

<summary>How many words should a picture book have?</summary>

Fewer than you might expect. The art carries much of the story, so a light text often reads better aloud and holds a young child's attention longer.

## [What makes a good picture book](#what-makes-a-good-picture-book)

A picture book earns its place on the shelf by being read again. The best children's picture books say a little and show a lot, so a young child can follow the story through the art before they can read a word. The rhythm matters too: a line that is a pleasure to say out loud is a line a child will ask for again. On a good page the words and the pictures do different jobs, and together they tell more than either could alone.

## [Picture books for toddlers and early readers](#picture-books-for-toddlers-and-early-readers)

Most picture books suit children from about two to six, though a good one has no strict ceiling. For toddlers, look for sturdy board books, bold shapes, and few words per page. For three to five year olds the story can grow: a simple problem, a gentle turn, and an ending that satisfies. By five or six a child begins to read the words themselves, and a familiar picture book is often where that reading starts. If you are choosing first books for a toddler, start simple and trust repetition.

## [Reading them together](#reading-them-together)

Picture books are built for company. Sit close, let your child turn the pages, and stop to talk about what you both see. Ask what might happen next. Point to the small details in the art. The half-hour before bed is a good home for them, when there is no rush and no test, only a shared story. This is where a child's first, quiet love of books is made.

## [Choosing by theme](#choosing-by-theme)

Once your child has favourites, theme is a lovely way to find the next book. Picture books about friendship help a child name what kindness feels like. Books about nature carry the outside world onto the page. Stories about big feelings, starting school, or a new baby give a child a gentle way to meet something new. Follow what your child is living through, and a picture book can do quiet, useful work.

## [Picture books for Malaysian families](#picture-books-for-malaysian-families)

At Wau Books, our picture book selection sits alongside titles in Bahasa Malaysia and stories set in Malaysia, so a child can see their own world reflected as well as the wider one. Reading across languages builds a confident, curious reader, and a bilingual home is a gift rather than a hurdle. Filter this collection by age, language, or theme to find a picture book that fits your child today.
