# Learn to Read & Phonics
Graded readers and literacy workbooks for the stretch between knowing letters and reading alone.
## Questions parents ask
At what age do children learn to read?
Most children move from knowing letters to reading first sentences somewhere between four and six, and the range is wide. Readiness shows as interest in letters, the ability to hear the first sound of a word, and the patience to sit with a short book. Age matters less than those signs.
What is a graded reader?
A book written with a deliberately small set of words so a beginner can read the whole thing alone. Schemes such as Key Words with Peter and Jane add a few new words per level so each book feels achievable.
Should I teach phonics or whole words?
Both help, and the Key Words scheme itself uses both: the a and b books build a sight vocabulary of common words, the c books add phonics. Most children need letter-sound practice (phonics) plus a bank of words recognised on sight.
What if my child finds a book too hard?
Drop a level without comment and come back later. A rough rule: more than one unknown word in twenty means the effort outweighs the enjoyment, and the point of this stage is to connect reading with success.

## [What "learning to read" needs from a book](#what-learning-to-read-needs-from-a-book)
A child learning to read needs three different kinds of book at once. Graded readers, written with a controlled set of words, let a child read a whole book alone and feel the result. Phonics and early-literacy workbooks give the letter-sound practice that reading schemes assume. And ordinary picture books, read aloud by an adult, keep the reason for all that effort in view: stories worth getting to.

Most children are ready for a first graded reader somewhere between four and six, once they know most letter sounds and can blend a short word. The [Key Words with Peter and Jane](https://waubooks.com/series/key-words-with-peter-and-jane) scheme begins at level 1a with a dozen words and builds from there; our guide on [choosing a Peter and Jane level](https://waubooks.com/journal/key-words-with-peter-and-jane-which-level) explains how to pick the first book and when to move up. If a child misses more than about one word in twenty, the book is too hard for now: step back a level without comment and return later.
The workbooks follow the same logic. The early-learning workbook for three year olds covers shapes, letters and pencil control; the phonics workbook suits a five year old who is starting to sound out words; the spelling, writing and school-essentials workbooks are for children of seven and older who read but still need practice getting words onto paper.
