## Questions parents ask

<details>

<summary>What are the best books for a 6 to 8 year old?</summary>

Early chapter books, illustrated stories, and comics that match your child's interests. Look for short chapters and clear layouts that make finishing feel achievable.

</details>

<details>

<summary>What should a 6 year old be reading?</summary>

Early readers and first chapter books with short chapters and plenty of pictures, plus plenty of reading aloud together. At six, sharing a book is still as valuable as reading alone.

</details>

<details>

<summary>What are good chapter books for a 7 year old?</summary>

Look for short chapters, clear language, and, ideally, a series. A seven year old who finds a set of characters they love will read book after book.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Are comics good for this age?</summary>

Yes. Comics and graphic novels build vocabulary, sequencing, and reading confidence. For many children they are the books that make reading click.

</details>

<details>

<summary>How can I help my child read on their own?</summary>

Follow their taste, keep books they enjoy within reach, and keep reading aloud a little above their level. Momentum matters more than difficulty: a finished book leads to the next.

## [The bridge years: reading for 6 to 8 year olds](#the-bridge-years-reading-for-6-to-8-year-olds)

Six to eight is the bridge from being read to toward reading alone. Books for this age can hold a longer story, but they still welcome a young reader in: short chapters, generous spacing, and pictures that give the eye a rest. Reading for 6 year olds often still means reading together, with the child taking a paragraph or a page; by seven and eight many children are reading whole chapters on their own. Both are exactly right. The goal is not speed but momentum.

## [Books for 6 year olds](#books-for-6-year-olds)

A six year old is often just stepping from picture books into early readers and first chapter books. Look for short chapters, a warm and simple plot, and plenty of pictures. Story books for 6 year olds that come in a series are a gift: a child who loves the first book has a whole shelf waiting, and the familiar characters make the next one feel easy. Comics belong here too, and they are not a lesser choice.

## [Books for 7 and 8 year olds](#books-for-7-and-8-year-olds)

By seven, many readers are ready for longer chapter books, first novels, and non-fiction they choose for themselves. Books for 7 year olds can carry a real plot across a hundred pages, as long as the chapters stay short and the language stays clear. Eight year olds often settle into a favourite series or subject and read it deeply. Short stories are useful at this age too: a whole, satisfying story in one sitting builds the confidence to start something longer.

## [Helping a child read on their own](#helping-a-child-read-on-their-own)

The aim at six to eight is a child who reaches for the next book without being asked. Let taste lead, even when it repeats, and even when it looks too easy. A series they love is worth more than a prize winner they abandon. Keep reading aloud, too: hearing a book a little above their own level keeps the joy in reading while their skill catches up. Our journal guide on reading for six year olds goes deeper on this.
