# Books for Ages 0 to 2
First books: sturdy, rhythmic, and made to be chewed as much as read.
## Questions parents ask
What books are best for a baby under one?
High-contrast board books, simple faces and shapes, and rhyme or song books read in a warm voice. At this age the sound and the closeness matter more than the story.
What books suit a one year old?
Sturdy board books with one clear picture per page, lift-the-flap books, and nursery rhymes they can start to predict. Expect pages to be turned fast and favourites to be requested daily.
What should a two year old be reading?
Nothing on their own yet. Two year olds enjoy short picture books with a simple story, rhymes they can finish, and books about their own routines: bath, bus, bedtime.
Are board books worth it?
Yes. They survive chewing and tearing, and a baby who is allowed to handle books freely treats them as part of everyday life rather than something kept away.
How many books does a toddler need?
Fewer than you might think. A handful of well-loved books read often does more than a shelf of books read once. Rotate a few new titles in as interests change.

## [What to expect from books for babies and toddlers](#what-to-expect-from-books-for-babies-and-toddlers)
Between birth and two, a book is a toy, a comfort and a conversation. Babies look at high-contrast pictures and listen to the sound of a voice; by one they turn pages and point; by two many toddlers finish the rhyme before you do. The right books for this age are short, sturdy and rhythmic, with one clear picture per page and words that are fun to repeat.
## [Board books and rhymes first](#board-books-and-rhymes-first)
Board books survive teeth and drool and small hands. Nursery rhymes and songs give a toddler language they can predict, which is early reading in disguise. Books with flaps, textures or a familiar routine (bedtime, bath, a trip on the bus) connect the page to the day.
## [How we chose these](#how-we-chose-these)
Every book here is listed for ages 0 to 2 in our catalogue, based on the publisher's guidance and our own reading. Most are board books or sturdy picture books; a few are picture books that work on a lap at the top of the range. The collection grows as we read more.
## [Reading with a toddler in Malaysia](#reading-with-a-toddler-in-malaysia)
Short and often beats long and rare. A song book at bath time, a board book before the nap, the same three favourites for a month: that repetition is doing quiet work on language. Many of these titles are in English; see the Malay collection for Bahasa Malaysia first books, and read the pages aloud in whichever language feels natural at home.
