In Book 1, their school bridge over the garden pond collapses during recess, and the trio sets out to design and build a better one before the end of the week. Each chapter maps to a stage in the engineering design process: identifying the problem, researching solutions, sketching designs, building a prototype, testing it, and improving it. The narrative is warm and funny — the first bridge attempt collapses spectacularly — but the engineering concepts are accurate and treated with respect throughout. At the end of every chapter, a one-page Make It Yourself section presents a simplified version of the chapter activity using common household materials: popsicle sticks, string, paper cups, and sticky tape. These activities have been classroom-tested in Malaysian primary schools and are designed to be completed in under thirty minutes.
